Celebrating 25th Anniversary of American Term Academic Exchange Program
Lee Schwartz, Director of the Office of the Geographer and Global Issues, recently visited Charles University along with Dr. Marie Price, professor of geography from The George Washington University and President of the American Geographical Society to celebrate the 25th anniversary of an academic exchange program between the United States and Czechia.
GGI Outreach Event and Mapathon
Lee Schwartz, Director of the Office of the Geographer and Global Issues, and Humanitarian Information Unit (HIU) analysts presented to a group of university students from the Washington metropolitan area. Participants mapped refugee settlements in northern Uganda.

World AIDS Day Mapathon
MapGive, along with Youth Mappers and the Humanitarian OpenStreetMap Team (HOT), hosted the second annual PEPFAR (U.S. President’s Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief) mapathon at the OpenGovHub in observance with World AIDS Day. The mapathon engaged the volunteer mapping community and helped publicize PEPFAR’s need for detailed geographic data.

State of the Map Africa, July 8-10
HIU’s MapGive initiative attended the first ever State of the Map Africa conference, hosted in Kampala, Uganda July 8-10. Participants showcased projects aimed at improving OpenStreetMap data throughout the continent.

2nd Mapathon @ AAG
This is the 2nd year that Mapathons and Mapathon related activities were hosted at the American Association of Geographers (AAG) Annual Meeting. Attendees joined a community of online mappers and contributed to five different OpenStreetMap (OSM) projects supporting humanitarian and development efforts.

Map Africa for a brighter future
Map data is key to humanitarian and development missions. On March 14, in partnership with the Millennium Challenge Corporation and the U.S. President’s Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief, HIU will participate in a mapathon to improve map data in Cote d’Ivoire, Tanzania, and Togo.
