South Sudan: HIV Prevalence from Antenatal Surveillance, 2012

South Sudan: HIV Prevalence from Antenatal Surveillance, 2012

Surveys in neighboring countries reveal border areas where HIV prevalence may also be high in South Sudan. The primary source of HIV surveillance data in South Sudan comes from pregnant women attending antenatal clinics (ANC). However, ANC data tend to overestimate HIV prevalence in the general population and may not even be representative of pregnant women living in the areas immediately surrounding the clinic. Less than half of South Sudanese women receive antenatal care at a health facility.

Ethiopia: Regional Coverage of Antiretroviral Therapy (ART) in the National Response, 2011

Ethiopia: Regional Coverage of Antiretroviral Therapy (ART) in the National Response, 2011

Maps of HIV prevalence are the most commonly used maps in the geographic targeting of HIV/AIDS programs. However, HIV prevalence may be high in an area with a small population and low in an area with a large population. Efforts to achieve high population coverage of antiretroviral therapy (ART) must use demographic data in estimates of the geographic distribution of people who are eligible for treatment. Furthermore, the expansion of ART takes place against a backdrop of an existing program. Therefore, to identify current gaps in coverage, program data is necessary to estimate the number of people currently receiving ART. This map set visualizes HIV prevalence, model-derived estimates of need for antiretroviral therapy, as well as program data to present estimated ART coverage in the eleven regions of Ethiopia.

DRC: Prevention of Mother-to-Child Transmission of HIV Services, 2012, PEPFAR and GFATM Support of Antiretroviral Prophylaxis

DRC: Prevention of Mother-to-Child Transmission of HIV Services, 2012, PEPFAR and GFATM Support of Antiretroviral Prophylaxis

Appropriate care can virtually eliminate mother-to-child transmission of HIV. HIU prepared these maps to support the planning of prevention of mother-to-child transmission of HIV programs (PMTCT) in three priority provinces in The Democratic Republic of the Congo. These maps identify health zones where the U.S. President's Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief (PEPFAR) and the Global Fund to Fight AIDS, Tuberculosis, and Malaria (GFATM) supported antiretroviral prophylaxis to prevent mother-to-child transmission in 2012.
