Maps of HIV prevalence are the most commonly used maps in the geographic targeting of HIV/AIDS programs. However, HIV prevalence may be high in an area with a small population and low in an area with a large population. Efforts to achieve high population coverage of antiretroviral therapy (ART) must use demographic data in estimates of the geographic distribution of people who are eligible for treatment. Furthermore, the expansion of ART takes place against a backdrop of an existing program. Therefore, to identify current gaps in coverage, program data is necessary to estimate the number of people currently receiving ART. This map set visualizes HIV prevalence, model-derived estimates of need for antiretroviral therapy, as well as program data to present estimated ART coverage in the eleven regions of Ethiopia.
